Byens Luft – Air Quality Monitor, Copenhagen

Download Byens Luft – Air Quality Monitor, Copenhagen, PM2.5, NO2, Ozone, Pollution Alerts

Overview

Byens Luft is a specialized mobile application designed to help residents of Copenhagen monitor local air quality in real time and plan their outdoor activities accordingly. The software targets individuals who are particularly sensitive to air pollution, including children with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. By providing forecasts for 103 locations across the city, the app enables users to assess pollution levels up to four days in advance, allowing for proactive decision-making regarding outdoor exposure.

The application is based on a scientifically developed quality index created by the DCE – National Center for Energy and Environment at Aarhus University, ensuring that the data is reliable and grounded in academic research. In addition to forecasts, Byens Luft delivers detailed information on key pollutants such as fine particles (PM2.5), coarse particles (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3). This level of transparency supports informed health management for vulnerable populations.

Users can also access historical data from six monitoring stations within Copenhagen, offering context for current pollution trends. The app is available at no cost on the Google Play Store, with regular updates to maintain data accuracy. Its primary purpose is to serve as a health-supportive tool for urban dwellers concerned about environmental health risks, particularly in densely populated areas with variable air quality.

Key Features & Capabilities

• Real-Time Air Quality Forecasts – Provides predictions for 103 locations across Copenhagen, extending up to four days ahead, enabling users to plan outdoor activities based on expected pollution levels.
• Pollution Alerts – Users can subscribe to notifications that trigger when pollution levels are predicted to reach extremely high thresholds in their chosen areas.
• Multi-Pollutant Monitoring – Displays detailed data on PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 levels, offering a comprehensive view of air quality composition.
• Historical Data Access – Allows users to review measurement data from the past 24 hours collected at six monitoring stations throughout the city.
• Health-Focused Design – Tailored for vulnerable groups such as children with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions.

These features are particularly useful for users who need to limit exposure to airborne pollutants due to medical conditions. For example, a parent of a child with asthma can use the forecast to avoid outdoor play during high-pollution periods. Similarly, a pregnant woman may use the app to decide whether to walk to work or take a car during a high-NO2 day. The integration of scientific data from a recognized research center adds credibility and trustworthiness to the app’s outputs.
